Tabiona council weighs tighter leash rules after two playground incidents

Council members and residents pressed for clearer animal-control measures after two recent incidents involving dogs at town playgrounds. "Since I've been put in as mayor, I've called them twice, and they immediately dispatched the deputy," the mayor said when describing prior contacts with the sheriff's department about animal-control responses.
Residents described one child who was bitten and another who had a dog clamp onto a leg and not release. Speakers urged the town begin by posting leash signs at the town park and on town property and to review the ordinance language so enforcement is possible. Council members noted that some affected locations, including a school playground, are outside town jurisdiction and that the town's direct authority applies mainly to town-owned properties and street fronts.
Members asked staff to read the existing ordinance and return with recommendations. The council also discussed contacting county animal-control and law-enforcement partners if the town's current enforcement mechanisms are insufficient.
