Residents deliver petition, urge lower speeds on South Lake Storey Road after fatal crash

During public comment Jim Jacobs introduced Janine Glass, who read a statement and turned in a petition asking officials to reduce the speed limit on South Lake Storey Road following a fatal crash on Nov. 22, 2025 that claimed her sister Marty Glass on Nov. 30. Glass described the road as 'winding, hilly' with many home driveways and proximity to Carl Sandburg College, and said campers and student drivers increase safety risks.
Glass proposed reducing the posted speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph from Henderson Street to Allison Campground and to 25 mph around the curves to make it safer for campers and other drivers trying to enter traffic. She told the board she collected over 40 signatures in a 2½-hour canvass on a very cold day (about 13–17°F) and turned the petition to Chair Hawkinson, who gave it to County Clerk-Recorder Scott Erickson for the record.
Jim Jacobs prefaced Glass’s remarks by identifying the victim and asking the board to hear her statement. The board did not take immediate action on the petition during the meeting; Chair Hawkinson accepted the petition into the record for the Infrastructure Committee to review (committee meets third Tuesday monthly at the Annex).
