Chief Court Security Officer Amanda Tomey told the panel that the walk‑through scanner for the circuit courtroom is malfunctioning — its lights remain on — and suggested relocating the upstairs scanner to the first floor or installing a key‑fob on a side door to provide secure access. She said a single point of entry is needed for the main courthouse to standardize screening.
Tomey identified multiple camera blind spots, including the entrance to the tax office, the back garage entrance at the James Cain Annex where vehicles pull in, the High Street entrance used for inmate entry, and the main courthouse entrance. She said there is no space in some locations for additional cameras and recommended repositioning existing cameras where possible.
She also reported that court security has 12 staff but only about eight radios and asked to confirm the precise radio count so replacements can be procured. Tomey recommended procurement or reallocation of scanners, repositioning of cameras, additional radios, and a review of door‑fob access for critical internal doors to improve officer communications and observation coverage.
