Randolph County approves funding for high-school graduation events and Boys/Girls State participants

The Randolph County Commission approved several community youth funding requests during the April 2 meeting. Rachel Varner of the Elkins Kiwanis Club described the Elkins High School "Project Safe Graduation"—an all-night event at the Phil Gainer Community Center on May 29–30 with games, prizes and a grand-prize Kindle Scribe—and requested $2,000; the Commission approved the request and noted community partners may donate additional prizes.
Steve Currence of the Tygart Valley Lions Club requested $2,000 to support the post-graduation party for approximately 52 students at the Elkins YMCA; the Commission approved $2,000 from courthouse contractual funds. Donnie Lambert of the American Legion requested county sponsorship for three juniors to attend Boys State (June 7–13, Jacksons Mill) and three girls to attend Girls State (at D & E College); the Commission approved $1,050 for three Boys State attendees and $900 for three Girls State attendees, with funds to be taken from courthouse contractual funds.
Officials emphasized these are recurring community-supported programs the county has sponsored previously; motions to approve each funding request passed unanimously.
