Library of Virginia staff told the board Jan. 12 that three funding requests submitted to the Governor's Office were not included in the Governor's proposal, including a $2.2 million request to deploy artificial intelligence for processing government records.
Dan Hinderliter, LVA chief operating officer, said the three requests asked for additional IT staffing following an external review that identified significant risk, compensation adjustments for library specialists, and the AI project intended to accelerate processing of government records. "None were included in the Governor's proposal," Hinderliter reported. LVA did receive $1.7 million in carry-forward funds earmarked for one-time projects focused on security upgrades, staffing initiatives, and conservation tied to VA250.
Board members heard the estimate and project scope as a request rather than an approved appropriation; staff noted the AI proposal remains contingent on future funding decisions. The board did not vote on the funding requests at the meeting.
