Catawba Nation Foundation details grant awards; local nonprofits to get about $240,000

Kristine Urrutia, Executive Director of the Catawba Nation Foundation, briefed the Board on the Foundation’s mission, governance and recent grantmaking. She said the Foundation, formed under the Catawba Nation compact and operating as a separate 501(c)(3), completed its first open grant cycle in 2025: "During the 2025 cycle, the Foundation received a total of 81 applications... Of these, 53 organizations were awarded funding," with approximately $800,000 awarded from roughly $5.3 million requested.
Urrutia provided regional detail for Cleveland County and nearby counties: 45 applications from the region requested about $3.2 million and 21 organizations received awards totaling approximately $240,000. She said the Foundation’s funding comes primarily from proceeds of the Two Kings Casino and noted plans for capacity-building support, a March 1 application portal opening, a virtual informational town hall on Feb. 18, and reporting from 2025 grantees due March 31, 2026. Commissioners thanked Ms. Urrutia for the Foundation’s local investment and partnership.
