Pierce County committee approves multiple change orders for new judicial facility, most covered by contingency

The Pierce County Ad Hoc Judicial Facility Planning Committee on Dec. 11 approved a series of construction change orders for the county’s new judicial facility, with most costs covered from the project owner’s contingency. John Nuzum of Market & Johnson summarized the technical clarifications and coordination changes driving the requests; all motions to approve the listed change orders carried unanimously.
The committee approved several no-cost adjustments (including plan clarifications for state review, civil grade changes at the main drive, EPDM roof assembly upgrades, and footing/foundation alignment). Five change orders called for additional contingency funds: electrical adjustments and an exterior light pole (COR#5, $19,007), lightning protection design and installation (COR#12, $27,115), boiler-loop modifications (COR#18, $3,862), moving two variable-frequency drives (COR#21, $2,594), and beam upsizing for live-load adjustments (COR#6, $520). Those five items total $53,098 and, per the committee record, will be paid from owner’s contingency within Market & Johnson’s contract.
Committee members asked for clearer documentation in future change orders about the purpose or cause of each change. Administrative Coordinator Jason Matthys and others noted the project remains on schedule; pending items (COR#4 and COR#10 on lighting controls and related issues) will return to the committee after further vetting. The meeting adjourned at 12:47 p.m.
