Lit tree on Slickrock draws praise and BLM caution; barriers or nightly monitors discussed

Andrea Brand reported the festive tree installed on the Slickrock bike trail is lit from about 5 to 8 p.m. and that public reaction has been positive. She said the lights are powered by a solar panel and a battery hidden behind the tree and are being promoted regionally.
BLM representative Jennifer Jones said cultural-resource concerns have been raised near the tree and that staff discussed placing a barrier; she said that if barriers fail to keep visitors behind the line the agency has requested a monitor at night and that, “if that is the case then they will just remove the lights.” Committee members and the county discussed permit routes for Jeep Safari staging and whether the Fox campground staging plan would displace other users. Grand County Commissioner Melodie McCandless noted promotional footage and a video from a local commissioner showing public interest; staff will continue coordination on barrier placement and monitoring before making further changes.
