Chesapeake Executive Council approves refreshed Watershed Agreement; Commission outlines tribal engagement and governance changes

The Chesapeake Bay Commission on Jan. 8 summarized outcomes from the Dec. 2, 2025 Chesapeake Executive Council meeting at the National Aquarium, where the Council approved a refreshed Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement with updated goals through 2040. Executive Director Anna Killius told members the revised agreement is intended to be “a more dynamic and engaging resource for the public,” and that staff will help implement the governance changes.
Killius said the Executive Council directed its Principals’ Staff Committee to work with watershed tribes on recommendations to include tribal nations in the Chesapeake Bay Program. Commission staff will continue to support the Program’s governance revisions; Members were told that recommendations to streamline governance will be further developed with an implementation target of July 2026. The update was framed as part of broader efforts to increase transparency and partner inclusion under the new agreement.
