Commission sets preliminary levy at 9.39% and taps $500,000 in reserves

The Traverse County Commission on Sept. 17 approved using $500,000 from the general fund reserves and set a preliminary levy increase of 9.39% over 2024, producing a net levy of $7,613,727.79. Commissioner Jerrel Olson made the motion, which was seconded by Commissioner Dwight Nelson and passed 4–1 with Commissioner Kayla Schmidt opposed.
Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson told the board the county’s levy increase over 2024 had been 16.57% in earlier calculations and noted the county’s fund balance remains above the State Auditor’s recommendation. The board set the Truth in Taxation public hearing for Dec. 4, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., where the levy will be finalized and public comments taken.
