Traverse County approves early purchase of motor graders and authorizes equipment auction

Traverse County’s Highway Department won board approval Aug. 6 to purchase two motor graders ahead of schedule and to conduct a fall auction of surplus equipment.
County Engineer Chad Gillespie asked the board to allow early procurement of two motor graders; Commissioner Kayla Schmidt moved to proceed and the motion passed unanimously. Gillespie also asked permission to auction a self-propelled broom, a tandem truck, a John Deere zero-turn mower, a John Deere riding mower and unit 38 pickup; the board approved the auction unanimously. Gillespie described a need for a truck lift to increase in-house repair capacity and said he planned to use proceeds from a prior auction, revenues from the upcoming auction and the budgeted unexpected-purchases line to pay for the lift.
Gillespie provided project updates on Hall’s Drive, CSAH 15, CSAH 4, County Road 76 bridge work and crushing. The board’s vote authorized the purchases and auction but did not appropriate a separate capital replacement fund at the meeting.
