Traverse County adopts shoreland ordinance amendments limiting weeds, junk vehicles and debris

Traverse County commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 6 to amend Land Use Ordinance Section 22, adding prohibitions on excessive weeds and rank vegetation, the placement of junk or abandoned vehicles, and the accumulation of junk, garbage and debris on shoreland property affecting Lake Traverse.
County Attorney Matt Franzese presented the amendment and fielded questions about the geographic extent of the regulation. Commissioner Dwight Nelson moved to approve the amendment and later amended the motion to include an assessment on vehicles; the board approved the amended motion. Franzese said enforcement costs associated with violations “will be collected by the property owner.” The summary ordinance was then approved unanimously.
Board discussion focused on how the county will define and enforce 'excessive' vegetation and what geographies count as shoreland; Franzese clarified the change applies to Lake Traverse shoreland. The board did not specify a new enforcement schedule at the meeting; commissioners said costs tied to enforcement would be charged to property owners.
