The Mecklenburg County Planning Commission unanimously approved a special exemption for Rock Spring Baptist Church/Arcola Towers to erect a 197‑foot communications tower on Parcel 18014 near the intersection of Route 825 (Ivy Hill Road) and Island Hill Road.
Jonathan Yates, speaking for Arcola Towers, said the proposed tower would sit on a roughly 135‑acre parcel adjoining an electric power station, could accommodate four additional carriers and "could provide better cell service for the area." An adjoining property owner asked the applicant to shift the tower location a few feet to address site concerns. The Zoning Office recorded two emails opposing the application.
The motion to approve was made by Charles Reamy and seconded by Derperdine Webster; commissioners attached conditions that the project not be detrimental to public welfare, not adversely affect health or safety, and provide improved cell and internet service. The approval is conditioned on compliance with VDOT requirements and applicable sections of the county zoning code.
