Planning Commission approves 199-foot Verizon monopole on Skyline Road

The Mecklenburg County Planning Commission voted unanimously on Jan. 15 to approve Cellco Partnership/Verizon Wireless’s application for a special exemption to construct a roughly 199‑foot monopole on Tax Parcel 38231 on the west side of Route 655 (Skyline Road).
Attorney Anthony Bologna, representing the applicant, said the project is sited on a 125‑acre parcel and "they would only be using about 1/2 acre," and that the location would "provide better coverage for the surrounding area." The Zoning Office reported one phone call opposing the application during the public comment period.
The motion to approve was made by Mark Warren and seconded by Charles Reamy; the Commission attached conditions requiring that the facility not be detrimental to public welfare, not adversely affect health or safety in the neighborhood, and provide improved cell service and internet connection to the area. The approval is conditioned on meeting any VDOT requirements and compliance with relevant sections of the Mecklenburg County Zoning Ordinance.
