Board approves purchase of Pen Road Convenience Center site to secure long‑term control

The Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Jan. 12 to approve a purchase and sale agreement with Gordon Brothers Farms, LLC to acquire the 2.9‑acre Pen Road Convenience Center site under a purchase option established in the 2021 lease agreement.
County Administrator Alex Gottschalk told the Board the lease included a purchase option that began at $10,000 per acre and increases by 2% annually beginning Jan. 1, 2023, producing a purchase price of approximately $30,391 for the 2.9‑acre parcel. He said sufficient funds are available in the Convenience Center design and construction budget and recommended exercising the option to secure long‑term site control and clarify DEQ compliance and maintenance responsibilities. The Board authorized the County Administrator and County Attorney to sign documents necessary to effectuate the acquisition; funds will come from the Capital Fund (#300) of the FY2025‑26 County Budget.
The action follows a Property Committee recommendation to move forward and aligns county ownership with expected long‑term operation of the convenience center.
