Zion National Park Discovery Center construction on schedule; ribbon-cutting planned spring 2027

Debbie Lyon of the Zion National Park Forever Project presented an update to the Kane County Redevelopment Agency on May 26, 2026, showing renderings, site photos and a six-phase landscaping and interpretive timeline for the Zion National Park Discovery Center.

Lyon said the building has "gone fully vertical" and is "fully dried in," with siding, windows and interior work progressing; she described completed roundabout and pathway work, rooftop garden preparations and early landscaping work tied to UDOT multi-use trail connections. She said stakeholder engagements have included the state legislature, county representatives and private partners and that the project remains on pace for construction milestones.

The presentation described the campus as an 18-acre site with a night-sky auditorium, interpretive pathways and phased parking expansion (oversized/oversight parking being planned as a later phase). Lyon said stakeholder funding partnerships — including outreach to industry and church sustainability leadership for interpretive components — are helping advance elements beyond the core building. The presenter said the team expects invitations to the governor and legislators for a spring 2027 ribbon-cutting and will continue deeper strategic engagement through the coming months.

Commissioners asked clarifying questions about placement of the oversized parking and the transit/parking planning; Lyon pointed to the back end of Phase 6 for the oversized parking area and noted ongoing work with the RV Industry Association and others for funding that component. No board action was requested or taken on the presentation; the item served as an informational update.
