Board hears economic update on Valor Atomics reactor testing, possible major taxable value

During the Feb. 17 meeting, Board Member Larry Jensen provided an economic update about Valor Atomics’ recent activity in the region. Jensen said Valor Atomics moved a reactor by air—using three C-17 cargo aircraft—to Hill Air Force Base for subsequent testing. He said the reactor design is a small modular reactor (SMR) that uses helium cooling and ceramic-coated fuel pellets and that the Secretary of Energy indicated the unit could supply power for roughly 5,000 homes. Jensen and others described the event as a historic development for the region.
Jensen added that testing is planned in Emery County with a target activation date of July 4, 2026, and that if Valor and related NDA projects expand into Carbon County, the combined taxable value could be in the $4–5 billion range. The board noted federal support for the move and the regional economic implications but did not take action on the update; the report was delivered as part of routine economic development briefings.
