Alex Gottschalk told the Board that the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development awarded Mecklenburg a $1.25 million Community Development Block Grant for housing rehabilitation in the Oak Road and Surface Road area (Election District 5). Limited initial planning may begin in the current fiscal year with most construction expected next fiscal year.
Gottschalk also said the county received a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets for All grant worth $150,000 (80% federal, 20% local match) to fund a safety study of the secondary road network to evaluate pedestrian, bicycle and traffic improvements. The study will be initiated once contractual details with U.S. DOT are complete. Both awards were informational to the Board at this meeting; staff will return with implementation timing and match details as planning advances.
