Mecklenburg accepts ~$400,000 in state grants and awards asbestos contract for Park View High School work

Mecklenburg County accepted roughly $400,000 in Commonwealth grant funding Feb. 9 to support asbestos abatement and roof stabilization at the former Park View High School and awarded a reduced-scope remediation contract to EIS Holdings, Inc.
County staff said $240,450 will come from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership’s Brownfields Restoration and Economic Redevelopment Assistance Fund and $150,000 from the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s Community Impact Stabilization and Deconstruction Grant. Because the grants did not cover the full abatement and roof scope, staff requested authority to use $50,000–$60,000 from the county's multipurpose reserve as a local match. The Board unanimously accepted the grants, declared EIS the lowest responsive and responsible bidder for the reduced scope (main building abatement and technical building roof) and authorized execution of a contract totaling $435,450.
The motion, moved by Sterling Wilkinson, directs the County Administrator and County Attorney to execute the contract with EIS and notes that bids for remediation of other portions were rejected. Staff said the developer will cover additional remediation amounts beyond the County's commitment under the redevelopment agreement.
