Board approves Verizon tower at Rock Spring Baptist Church to boost coverage

The Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a Special Exception Permit for a 197-foot Verizon wireless tower at Rock Spring Baptist Church on Ivy Hill Road.
Jonathan Yates of Arcola Towers told the Board the unmanned tower would support Verizon and up to three other carriers, would be sited near an existing Mecklenburg Electric substation, and that the FAA determined it would pose no hazard to air navigation and would not require lighting. He said the nearest residence is about 829 feet away and the facility would generate no noise or regular traffic beyond occasional maintenance visits. The Planning Commission recommended approval with conditions that the Board adopted.
Board members noted the public hearing drew no public comment. The motion to approve was made by Andy Hargrove and carried unanimously. One of the conditions listed by the Planning Commission stated that the project "will not be detrimental to public welfare" and "will not adversely affect the health or safety of persons or businesses in the neighborhood of the proposed use." Supporters said improved coverage will help emergency alerts and broadband access in the area. The permit includes standard setback and operation conditions.
