Montrose council declines Red Cross pool certification for now, discusses 2026 pay raises

Finance Officer Nicole Siemonsma told the Montrose City Council at its Oct. 14 meeting that certifying the municipal swimming pool through the Red Cross is not presently beneficial for the city.
Siemonsma said that, because of high turnover among swim instructors and lifeguards, certifying a small-city pool "does not offer any benefits to employees or the employer at this time," and the council agreed to defer certification unless the Red Cross can offer clearer benefits. Council members also discussed possible pay raises for pool staff in the 2026 season; no formal pay-rate change was approved at the meeting.
