Council approves $219,000 addition to administrative budget for proposed hires

City Manager David Brickey briefed the council on staffing proposals and associated costs. He said the council had previously budgeted $110,000 toward hiring, but estimated three positions with benefits would cost approximately $372,000 for a full year: an assistant city manager (~$185,000), an assistant to the mayor (~$105,000), and Webster Center customer-service staff (~$85,000). Brickey asked the council whether it was comfortable directing staff to add the additional $219,000 needed to fund those positions for the upcoming budget cycle.
Council Member Megan Olsen moved to add $219,000 to the City’s Administrative Budget for the discussed positions. The motion passed 4-1 with Council Member Audrey Pierce voting "no." Brickey said the city’s administrative budget had more than $900,000 available and that the additional funds would be transferred to reserves rather than depleting them. Council members discussed hiring parameters, the at-will nature of proposed positions, and a desire to review new hires after a short working period for fit. No final hires were announced at the Jan. 27 meeting; staff will bring job descriptions and public hearing notices for budget changes to future meetings.
