Neighbors question rezoning after CRA includes church parcel in Broadway project area

A long-time neighbor raised concerns at the Jan. 27, 2026 Magna CRA meeting about whether the Broadway church parcel remained subject to single-dwelling residential zoning and why the recent rezoning to "public facilities" had not been apparent to nearby homeowners. Roberta Nichols said she has lived across from the church property for more than 70 years and asked the board why the change was not clear to nearby residents.
Dan Torres, a city staff member, responded that the City Council rezoned church and other public-facility properties citywide on Nov. 18 to a public facilities designation. He said that change means the Broadway parcel is currently zoned for public uses and that any future non-public use would require Planning Commission review and a return to City Council. Board Member Terry George said the ordinance was intended to preserve Council authority over future land-use decisions.
