Montrose sets June 2, 2026 election date and signs combined city/school agreement
Summary
Following changes in South Dakota law, the Montrose City Council selected June 2, 2026 for the city election and authorized participation in a combined city/school election agreement (to be re-evaluated every three years) to share costs for advertising, election board pay and supplies.
The Montrose City Council voted unanimously on Dec. 9 to hold the 2026 city election on June 2, 2026 (Action 25-161) after the finance officer noted South Dakota legislation now allows municipalities to choose either June or Nov. election dates. Councilmember Vogel moved the date selection and Councilmember Hanisch seconded.
The council also authorized the finance officer to sign a combined city/school election participation agreement, recommended by the county auditor, outlining shared financial responsibilities for advertising, election-board pay and training, and supply orders; the agreement will be re-evaluated every three years (Action 25-162). The finance officer noted the statutory advertising window has increased to six months before election day.
