County finds $118 from 2018 during office cleanout; commits to secure evidence handling

Scott Park told the committee that while cleaning out the internal auditor's office staff discovered an envelope containing $118 in $1 bills and a dated receipt. Park said he traced the amount to earlier audit findings referencing $118 and concluded the envelope appeared to be retained evidence from a prior matter.
"As soon as we discovered it we walked it over to the Treasurer's Office, deposited it into our miscellaneous account," Park said, and he pledged the controller's office will secure audit evidence appropriately going forward and consult the attorney's office when cash is involved. The committee discussed formalizing an audit-evidence checklist and better storage and disposal procedures to prevent recurrence.
No allegations of misconduct were raised during the meeting; Park presented the discovery as an administrative lapse that has been rectified and will be addressed by new procedures.
