Finance committee cites tight deadline, rising health-benefit costs as pressure on levy
Summary
A finance committee member said the committee discovered the 6.65% figure the day before a county deadline and that rising health-benefit costs are a primary driver of the proposed increase, citing a 20% premium rise with the district covering about 70% of that increase.

A finance committee member who spoke during the meeting said the committee found the 6.65% figure only the day before the county submission deadline, which constrained options to delay the filing. The member said committee members had met and reviewed the presented line items and will continue that work ahead of the April 28 vote.
The finance committee member referenced benefit-cost pressure and staffing as major budget drivers: "we're paying 20% of an increase, and the district is responsible for 70% of that that increase," the member said, and noted that salaries and benefits account for about 75% of the budget. The committee member also said personnel decisions cannot be discussed in open session because they involve personnel matters.
