Board clears transfer of San Simeon Creek stream gauge to county flood control

The board approved an agreement Feb. 12 to transfer ownership of the San Simeon Creek USGS stream gauge to the San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. Utilities staff explained the gauge, installed in 1987, flooded during the 2023 storms and requires relocation and a modern bubbler installation; responsibility for ongoing operation and maintenance would become the county’s.
Utilities Manager Green said the county is pursuing funding to design and raise the station above the floodplain. The district’s obligations under the transfer are limited to granting access and coordinating with county staff; the county would be responsible for permitting, installation and future maintenance. The measure passed by roll call with no fiscal impact to the district recorded in the staff report.
