Army Corps proposes snow survey in Partridge Woods to inform MacDowell Dam runoff

Caleb Blakeslee, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, presented a proposal to the Nelson Selectmen on July 15 to place snow‑survey stations in Partridge Woods and at sites on Beech Hill in Harrisville to improve runoff estimates for MacDowell Dam. "There would be about 5 locations chosen, each approximately 2’x2’, and around 30’ off the trail," Blakeslee said; he added the plots would be cleared of leaves and small brush but would require no tree cutting and would be accessible on foot from Brickyard Road.
Blakeslee said the data from periodic snow-depth and weight measurements are used to determine anticipated spring runoff and that the Corps prefers stations on public land because private sites have access problems. He told the board the current station at Hardy Hill Road and Nelson Road is on private land and maintenance access has become difficult as trees have fallen. Blakeslee said the Corps will submit a formal written permission request and will forward the final agreement to the Selectmen for consideration at the next meeting. J. Yardley of the Conservation Commission was not present for the presentation and will be briefed and given an opportunity to follow up with the Corps.
