Dorset committee presses applicant on ADA clearance and ramp design

Members of the Dorset Design Review Committee raised accessibility concerns about the proposed south-side entrance and the ramp design during the Dec. 16 meeting. Contractor Andrew Chila reported the south door was 34 inches; the committee said a typical wheelchair clear opening is 36 inches and asked the applicant to measure and confirm whether the opening needs modification to meet ADA clearance standards.
Chair Kit Wallace criticized the ramp’s appearance and asked for a design more consistent with the building and village character. "I really don't like the ramp. It looks like 2x4s. It looks chunky and homemade," Wallace said, and asked for thinner posts or balustrades and other village examples to be used as guidance. Chila said he would have the architect produce a new ramp design for review at the January meeting.
