Rogue River council hears school, fire and Chamber updates; local grants and staffing highlighted

Councilor Grace Howell summarized Jackson County Fire District #1 activity, saying the department had handled 772 calls through April 2026 (39 fires, 170 ambulance calls), has hired three seasonal firefighters who start in July, and that Chief Hammond plans to retire in December 2026 after assisting recruitment mid-year. Councilor Barb Hilty reported on Chamber of Commerce plans for the awards banquet on May 30 and the rollout of a new digital walking map. Public commenter Dee Copley noted the Chamber walking map is a prototype and "it is not 100% that will work the evening of the dinner," indicating the map may still require adjustments before public use.
Councilor Sherrie Moss reported finance committee activity between April 18 and May 22, noting the committee issued 87 checks and seven electronic payments totaling $181,304.14 during that period.
