District reports PFAS spikes after major storm; treatment designs underway

District Operations Manager Matt Brooks updated the board on PFAS sampling and treatment-planning efforts, saying a voluntary influent sample taken at the Grass Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant after the Feb. 13 storm showed elevated PFAS consistent with a community "first flush." Groundwater and a raw water sample from Bernina taken about three weeks after the storm showed slightly elevated PFAS levels as well.
Brooks said the District is working with N2W Engineering to design PFAS removal systems for the Bernina and Cedar Glen treatment plants; staff performed a confined-space entry at Cedar Glen to verify measurements needed for the design. He noted N2W has been responding to questions from the State and that a Biological Resources report has been received as the design approaches 90% completion. Public questions were received during the discussion.
