Milton-Freewater library board agrees to $1,500 annual Kanopy subscription

The Library Board of the City of Milton-Freewater agreed March 26 to pursue a flat $1,500 annual subscription to Kanopy by OverDrive to expand digital media offerings for patrons.
Library Director Lili Schmidt reported she had been in contact with a Kanopy representative and presented pricing options; the board agreed that a single annual fee would avoid variable per-use charges. The plan described to the board would cover all 2,371 registered borrowers and allow each borrower 25 “tickets” per month to access titles for 3–7 days. The subscription also would include Kanopy Kids, described in the minutes as having “2,000+ program titles” for children ages 4–12.
Board Member Jennifer LeBlanc, who said she has used Kanopy previously, told the board she “loved it” for the educational programs it offers. Board members Laurel Estes and Randy Reese also indicated the $1,500 flat-fee option was a reasonable way to provide broader access without unpredictable per-item charges.
The board’s acceptance of the subscription recommendation does not appear in the minutes as a formal vote authorizing expenditure; the minutes record the board’s agreement to pursue the plan. Director Schmidt presented the item as part of her updates and the cost will be considered as staff prepares the FY27 budget materials for later review.
