Committee approves bill requiring search engines to respond to delisting notices

Chairman Faizon presented an amendment to House Bill 2028 that narrows the proposal to cover search engines that delist businesses and places the initial burden on business owners to notify the search engine of a delisting. The amendment would require search engines to respond in writing within five business days, either providing a reason for the delisting or instructions to regain listing.
The sponsor said the change places the onus on the business owner to contact the search engine and creates a five-business-day response window for search engines to reply in writing. Committee members expressed support for making it easier for business owners to find contacts and resolved to consider additional transparency amendments next session; the committee voted 22-0 to advance the bill to calendar and rules.
