Committee approves moving elevator, amusement and boiler inspections to Department of Commerce

Representative Butler told the committee HB 2334 is designed "to make government work better for our Tennessee citizens" by moving elevator, amusement devices and boiler inspection divisions from the Department of Labor to the Department of Commerce. He said the Department of Labor must transfer necessary records to Commerce by November 15, and Commerce would implement the transfer on July 1, 2027.
Members asked why the divisions were originally placed in Labor; the sponsor said he had the same question and no clear origin was known, but stakeholders and the Governor's office had been consulted and the move had been negotiated. The bill advanced with a unanimous committee vote and was sent to government operations.
