State Senator Sabrina Cervantes administered the oath. Hernandez told the council and a packed chamber he was "overwhelmed with gratitude with all the individuals who are here tonight and their support," and said the campaign had grown "into a movement" that brought together volunteers, unions and community leaders across wards.
Hernandez thanked family members and a long list of volunteers by name and said he takes the community's trust seriously, promising to follow through on campaign commitments. Mayor Patricia Loch Dawson conducted the ceremony and signaled the council would recess to closed session for other business before Hernandez returned for his first official duties.
