Hawthorne Drive landscaping stalled; Mariposa to deliver soil tests and planting plan

Council Chair Brian Trushinski reported that the Hawthorne Drive landscaping project (Bowfield Street to Kanan Road) has been stagnant for almost eight months because contractors have not supplied requested planting lists and cost estimates. Mariposa Landscapes Inc. told the MAC it is now conducting soil testing to determine which plant species will thrive on the hillsides and boulevards; the contractor is expected to provide a plant list and cost estimate for discussion at the November MAC meeting.
Members discussed plant choices and maintenance concerns for Kanan Road monument and Tamarind Street community sign plantings, noting a preference for low‑maintenance annuals rather than roses and asking that ongoing maintenance costs be included in the contractor's estimate. The Council designated Vice Chair Michelle Santucci to oversee the Kanan/Tamarind site visit and to coordinate with Mariposa and Public Works staff.
