Parks director highlights expansion and names employee of the year

Parks Director Pamela Galera reviewed parks programming, capital projects and grant plans across Riverside and recognized Victoria Koo Young as the 2025 Parks, Recreation & Community Services employee of the year for leadership on STEAM and youth programming.
Pamela Galera, director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, presented an overview of the department’s programs and projects, noting investments across 3,000 acres of parkland, 14 community centers (including three senior centers), seven pools, and more than 60 parks. She outlined completed and upcoming projects including the Arlington Park pickleball complex, planned Gage Canal trail construction, Patterson Park renovation, a new pool at La Sierra, Nichols Community Center planning for a deaf cultural/resiliency center, and Bobby Bonds Park redevelopment including a new library and Cesar Chavez Community Center.
Galera also announced Victoria Koo Young as the department’s 2025 employee of the year in recognition of her leadership launching STEAM programming and the Born Family Youth Innovation Center. Victoria accepted the award and credited coworkers and management.
Councilmembers and members of the public praised parks staff and the department’s youth and senior programming. The council presented certificates and invited staff to the dais for recognition.
