Meeker trustees adopt backflow-prevention ordinance tied to DEQ standards

The Meeker Board of Trustees voted unanimously on April 20 to adopt Ordinance 26-006, a backflow-prevention sewer ordinance that incorporates Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) standards and establishes installation, inspection and maintenance requirements.
Trustee Aaron Head and Town Administrator Jeff Wilbourn led discussion on how the ordinance should apply to existing structures. Dan Clay noted that sewer permits are issued for line replacements or improvements and recommended requiring backflow prevention devices at the time of new construction, repairs or replacements rather than mandating retroactive installation for all residences. The consensus favored requiring devices for new construction and for properties undergoing future sewer improvements.
Trustee Head moved to adopt the ordinance; Trustee Weber seconded and the motion passed with Trustee Massey voting yes. The Board also adopted the emergency clause to enact the ordinance immediately. The ordinance will require the Town to define compliance deadlines and how to document when upgrades are required for existing connections.
