The Board discussed a possible sales tax increase and received procedural guidance from bond counsel Allen Brooks on timelines, costs and election requirements.
Brooks told trustees that Meeker’s current total sales tax is 9.5% (1% county, 4% town, 4.5% state) and summarized typical election costs at $10,000–$15,000, including about $7,500 for bond counsel and roughly $300 per precinct. He explained an April 2 filing deadline would be required for an earliest feasible June 16 election and that missing that deadline would likely push the earliest practical opportunity to the next regular cycle.
Trustees discussed timing and public outreach; Aaron Head moved that staff begin gathering information about a potential sales tax increase and include anticipated election costs in the upcoming budget. The motion carried unanimously.
