Village Manager Patrick Burke told trustees on May 26 that staff have met with the Vernon Area Public Library Director to discuss a proposed "Gratitude Walk" partnership, scheduled for September. Burke said the planned event would celebrate community members who provide services and help welcome new residents; many logistical details remain to be determined.
As outlined by Burke, the Rotary Club would lead a fundraiser in which residents or businesses could sponsor full-size U.S. flags that include a medallion identifying the sponsor and the person being honored. Burke described how the flags would be purchased for reuse and placed along the walk route so participants could read dedications — "essentially creating a 'flag forest,'" he said. Rotary representatives view the project as an opportunity to mark the nation's 250th anniversary as well.
Trustee Mitchell suggested coordinating the walk's end with a Summer in the Shire concert to increase attendance and make the finish more celebratory. Burke said he has another meeting scheduled with library staff and will provide additional information as planning continues; no formal approvals or funding requests were made at this meeting.
