Resident and inventor present ‘Beaver Deceiver’ as nonlethal option for recurring culvert problems

A Fairfield resident described recurring beaver activity at a culvert and invited the Selectboard to consider a “Beaver Deceiver.” The inventor and a representative of the VT Beaver Collective outlined the approach; the board asked Town staff to gather more information for the road crew.
Erik Bushey, a Fairfield resident, told the Selectboard that a culvert near his house frequently attracts beavers and that the town’s road crew has repeatedly had to respond. He suggested the town consider a nonlethal “Beaver Deceiver” to reduce repeat maintenance and help preserve local wetlands.
Skip Lisle, identified in the meeting as the inventor and builder of Beaver Deceivers, and Beverly Soychak of the VT Beaver Collective presented the device and its potential application for the site Bushey described. Selectboard member Brian Dubie noted that he and a town road crew member attended VTRANS training on beaver-management best practices. The board requested that Bushey and the presenters provide written information to Town Administrator Cathy Ainsworth so the road crew can evaluate the option.
The discussion produced no motion and no immediate change in policy; the board’s next step is for staff to review the submitted information and report back. The matter will remain an item for future consideration alongside other culvert and drainage work.
