Officials call for software fixes and a covered C&D pad after chaotic day at the transfer station

Committee members reported operational problems at the Fair Haven transfer station after a busy weekend, saying repeated software and scale issues created long lineups and operational friction for staff and residents.
"Every time I go down there, now they're fighting with the computer to try to get a scale weight," Committee member Dennis (Speaker 4) said, recounting delays that led to backup on the access road. He recommended investing in a more user-friendly, integrated system that combines scale recording and credit-card processing. Dennis also urged building a proper construction-and-demolition pad with an overhang and a covered container so mattresses and box springs are not left to get wet and then flagged for extra fees. "We're putting them in that box and we're getting charged a mattress fee on top of the scale fee," he said.
Board members acknowledged the transfer station needs redesign and discussed next steps, including collecting quotes and considering small capital investments in the FY27 budget to improve operations and reduce recurring handling costs.
