Chancellor Steve Maroney received a positive recommendation from the Judiciary Committee to the full General Assembly for a seat on the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Western section. The committee recorded a favorable board vote and congratulated Maroney after a question-and-answer session about his transition from chancery court to the appellate bench.
Members who introduced and endorsed Maroney highlighted his years of local service. Representative Todd said Maroney’s “wisdom, strength of character, and sound leadership has given Madison County a great deal to be proud of and therefore I wholeheartedly give my support.” Miss Merrick, representing the governor’s office, noted Maroney is the governor’s appointee to fill the vacancy left by Judge Kenny Armstrong’s retirement.
During questioning, Maroney told the committee the “biggest immediate challenge I’m going to have is staffing,” explaining it is an unusual hiring cycle for law clerks and asking members to share recommendations. He said his longer-term priority would be learning court procedures and contributing to efficient opinion writing on the appellate panel.
The committee moved Maroney’s nomination and recorded the recommendation for referral to the full General Assembly for consideration.
