Council OKs $127,548 in CDBG-funded equipment for Pope Avenue stormwater rehab

The City Council approved two equipment purchases for the Pope Avenue Stormwater System Rehabilitation Project on June 9: a backflow preventer from Ferguson Waterworks for $42,100 and a stormwater pump from MWI Pumps for $85,448. City Manager James L. Gillis Jr. said both items are custom and carry an estimated three-month lead time for manufacture.
Gillis explained the backflow preventer is necessary to keep Reed Canal water out of the Pope Avenue pipe and that the existing unit is beyond its useful life. He told council the purchases were procured following the city's bidding process and will be paid for with a FY 2025/2026 Volusia County Community Development Block Grant award. Councilwoman Lisa O'Neal moved approval; Vice‑Mayor Doug Quartier seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
