Moose Lake council approves moving 1st Street sidewalk to protect trees

The Moose Lake City Council on July 23 approved a design modification for the LRIP 1st Street Reconstruction Project to move the south-side sidewalk to the back of the curb between Elm Avenue and Birch Avenue and to end the sidewalk at the last house on 1st Street. Councilor Doug Juntunen moved the change and Councilor Lou Ohly seconded; the motion passed with Yes votes from Ohly, Juntunen, Huso and Lower.
Councilor Walter Lower III raised a concern about snow maintenance, asking whether snow would be plowed onto a sidewalk if it is located closer to the road. City staff said they had met with adjacent business owners; Grimm’s will retain curb access and the laundromat indicated it is willing to grant a permanent easement to place sidewalks behind the City’s public parking spaces. The design adjustment was described as aimed at preserving existing trees and landscaping along the corridor.
The council’s recorded action amends the project design for the south side of 1st Street in the corridor between Elm Ave and Birch Ave; staff will proceed with plans that reflect the approved change and any necessary property easement paperwork.
