Shaw Island board directs superintendent to advertise for .8 FTE teacher amid tight budget

During the May 12 meeting, Superintendent Becky Bell described a draft budget developed with Business Manager Kara Moore that assumes hiring a second teacher at .8 FTE in addition to the current 1.0 FTE. Bell said that under the most expensive staffing assumptions and without carryover funds, the draft budget would show a net deficit of approximately $2,000.
Director Jon Shannon moved for the board to direct the superintendent to advertise for the position; Director Shannon Klohr seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. The board also discussed forming hiring committees and a timeline for hiring.
The discussion focused on balancing staffing needs with the District’s limited resources; the draft budget also presupposes a reduction in the superintendent’s contract amount and reduced office hours as cost-control measures.
