Skamania board raises starting bus driver wage to $30 to address staffing shortage

The Skamania School District Board voted on Feb. 19 to increase the starting hourly wage for bus drivers to $30 to help attract applicants. Superintendent Milt Dennison described ongoing transportation challenges, noting an interview was scheduled and that it could take a couple of months to train a candidate. The district currently transports about 18 students to Stevenson in the afternoons.
Board member Martin “Rowdy” LaFevers moved to increase the starting wage to $30; Lisa Young seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board recorded the wage increase as a direct step to address staffing shortages; no additional funding source or offset was specified at the meeting.
