Panel backs one-year extension for judicial redistricting task force

Representative Moody, sponsor of House Bill 1-81, told the subcommittee the bill "changes the deadline for the task force" reviewing judicial districts from Jan. 1, 2027, to Jan. 1, 2028, and pushes the General Assembly reapportionment deadline to Dec. 31, 2028. Moody said the extra year "will allow this task force additional time to complete their task."
Representative Johnson said the series of piecemeal district requests showed the need for a comprehensive redistricting study now rather than staggered changes; Moody said the extension provides the task force more time to produce a proposed statewide plan. The subcommittee voted 6–0 to send HB 1-81 to full judiciary.
