Council reallocates unused gazebo funds to large pavement-rehabilitation project

Vice Mayor Scott asked public works staff about the status of a previously planned gazebo renovation and whether $200,000 should remain reserved for that project. Veil Leary, deputy public works director and city engineer, said the allocated funds had been insufficient and the project stalled; the city will continue annual inspections and basic maintenance to keep the gazebo safe but will reallocate the unspent Measure C dollars into the 2025 citywide pavement rehabilitation program, which has a significant deferred-maintenance backlog.
Leary said prior design proposals (in 2017) had included elements — such as replacing timber with steel and constructing an ADA ramp — that raised cost and produced community pushback; staff recommended shelving the larger renovation until the city’s financial position improves and using the unused funds for higher-priority pavement preservation work. The council approved the reallocation in a roll-call vote.
