Shelby council unanimously commends officer for de-escalation in armed-encounter

The Village of Shelby Village Council on June 22 adopted Resolution No. 41-26 formally recognizing Officer Stephen Wietrzykowski for his response to a weapons-related incident in May 2026. The council voted 7–0 to approve the commendation.
Police Chief Dean Roesler described the May incident and praised Wietrzykowski's judgment. According to the council record, an armed subject approached the officer making statements that suggested an intent to provoke a lethal outcome; Officer Wietrzykowski deployed his taser and, after two applications, subdued the individual, who was treated by emergency medical personnel and transported to jail. Chief Roesler told the council that, considering "the totality of the circumstances" and under department policy and state law, the use of lethal force would have been justified but the officer used a less-lethal alternative.
The council resolution said Wietrzykowski "demonstrated extraordinary composure, judgment, and a disciplined commitment to de-escalation," and commended him for protecting public safety while respecting life. The resolution was moved by Mike Termer and supported by Samantha Gottschalk; the roll-call vote recorded ayes from Termer, Gottschalk, Crothers, Zaverl, Heykoop, Trott and Sutton.
